Study Description

The million-mile study of 14½ year-old drivers is the first study of its type to provide parents and teens context-related information on their driving development using video feedback. Using the DriveCam event triggered video recorder, this study will provide a unique and sustained look into young driver skill development for state and federal policy makers, and the automotive and insurance industries.

Objectives

The objective of this project is to examine driver skill development, behavior and safety of our youngest and most vulnerable drivers - 14½ year-old independent drivers driving to school and school-related activities.

Scope of Work

Fourteen year-old drivers have never been studied in the naturalistic driving context before. Applying a detailed analysis of this population will provide important additional data to understanding the driving development for our youngest drivers. Such data could be used in future policy enhancements for graduated drivers licensing and training recommendations. The long-range goal of this research is to reduce crashes and related injuries among teen drivers by increasing driving skill and safe driving practices. The project will test a family-focused intervention to influence teens driving and related safety behaviors.

Comments

State commitments of $15,000-20,000 per year for 4 years requested.
