Study Description

MODOT is considering building a ¿2+1¿ roadway (also known as an ¿Alternate 4-Lane¿ roadway) and would like to simulate the roadway to aid in the design of the roadway

Objectives

Federal Highway Administration Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center will prepare a simulation on the interactive Highway Driving Simulator for the alternate 4-lane roadway being designed on MO 5 in Camden and Laclede counties. The simulation will incorporate the road design from the MO 5 project including the rolling profile and at-grade intersections. The simulation will also include traffic on the roadway to help the driver get a sense of passing and merging maneuvers.

Scope of Work

Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center will provide MoDOT with the following deliverables: ¿ Two copies of a portion of the simulation video for the proposed alternate 4-lane roadway being designed on MO 5 in Camden and Laclede Counties completed for public use by June 29, 2007. ¿ Two copies of the complete simulation video for the proposed alternate 4-lane roadway being designed on MO 5 in Camden and Laclede Counties completed by July 31, 2007. Deliverables are contingent on the following assumptions and restrictions: ¿ A simplified zero grade road bed will be modeled, initially. Any additional elevation will be done based on mutual agreement with MoDOT, time permitting. ¿ Video for 3 separate road sections of 1.8 mi., 4.1 mi. and 1.6 mi defined by MoDOT. One section has been received on 15Mar07. ¿ Each road section will be defined by CAD files for major intersection and generic / typical definitions for any minor roads. ¿ Minor side roads and driveways will be modeled generically and on a per request basis (and time permitting) using a priority list from MoDOT. ¿ Off road features will be mostly generically defined while matching the character of the area. ¿ A small prioritized list of landmarks and features will be modeled as requested by MoDOT and time permitting to represent recognizable locations along the road. ¿ Each specific feature or building will require orthographic digital imagery of sufficient resolution for model inclusion. To be provided by MoDOT. ¿ Reference video and aerial imagery of the roadway will be made available to aid in modeling. To be provided by MoDOT. ¿ Traffic will be model as simplified patterns near intersections of interest. ¿ Video format will be MPEG2. Stills or Screen Captures will be jpeg format.
