Objectives

To develop enhanced guidance and low-cost, effective solutions for major crash concerns identified in AASHTO & 039;s Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The goal is to facilitate implementation of solutions that have the potential to reduce fatal crashes by at least 10 to 15 percent in 3 to 5 years. Guidebooks will be developed for the following crash concerns: truck-related, pedestrian in large urban areas, utility pole, curve-related, signalized intersections, older drivers, and unbelted drivers and occupants. (updated 7/2/01)

Comments

SPR-2(209) is being conducted as part of Phase 2 of NCHRP Project 17-18(3), "Guidance for Implementation of the AASHTO Strategic Highway Safety Plan." Guidebooks were drafted, evaluated by volunteer demonstration States, revised based upon feedback from participating States, and reviewed and approved for publication by the NCHRP 17-18 panel. Final guidebooks have been published as volumes 7 through 13 of the NCHRP Report 500 series. The 7 volumes are attached and posted at AASHTO & 039;s Strategic Highway Safety Plan web site, http://safety.transportation.org/ The remaining activity under this project is technology transfer and technical support for implementation of these guides.
