The purpose is to enrich the national database of approximately 25,000 households with additional samples collected in, and paid for by, larger MPOs and States. The data collected is used to analyze the amount and nature of personal travel on all modes of conveyance by the American public. For local planning the data is used to calibrate and develop forecasts for local area planning considerations. The importance of the enriched sample is that it allows robust examination of the mobility of smaller population groups and smaller modal shares, such as pedestrians and transit riders.
