To develop a more reliable test for alkali-reactivity potential of silica aggregates based on chemical measurements.
1. Investigate modifications of ASTM C 289 to relate the measurement more directly to reaction chemistry. 2. Modify test procedures to more accurately measure dissolved silica, alkalinity and possibly swelling. 3. Revise threshold for reactive aggregates based on new understanding of reaction process. 4. Apply test method to aggregates from pooled fund member states.
This continues research initiated under the first round of the pooled fund. Work to date has used X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance and bulk chemical analysis to provide a fundamental understanding of the chemical conditions under with the ASR gel transforms into a layered material with a greater swelling potential. This second round of pooled funding is required to apply this understanding to develop a more reliable test method. ***The minimum amount requested from each participating state is $20K.
