Objectives

A comprehensive literature review on lithium technologies since termination of the Strategic Highway Research Program effort on ASR In Concrete will be carried out. The applicability of lithium technologies will be appraised, using test samples from a number of affected highway concrete structures from different parts of the country, to be provided to the lead research team by the participating state highway agency. The lithium compounds that are being marketed have already begun to be used to treat ASR-affected structures by a number of the participating state transportation agencies. The penetration depth of lithium and the material characteristics of the concrete will be determined as a function of time, over the five-year duration of the project. Time versus lithium penetration will be recorded during this period. Additionally, the state of the concrete in these structures will be periodically evaluated (once every six to eight months) through field inspection and laboratory investigation of cores to examine if mitigation has been achieved as a result of lithium application. Besides mitigation of ASR, the other principal tasks in this project will be to develop lithium based technologies for the prevention of ASR in new construction. These include the use of lithia glass in a fine powder form to be introduced in concrete mixtures in different dosages, mainly as a mineral admixture. Preliminary results in terms of prevention of ASR have been highly encouraging, and one of the objectives of this study will be to optimize such concrete mixtures to prevent ASR in future concrete placements. The concept of developing a lithium-modified Portland cement is also being considered as an alternative method of preventing ASR in new construction. As a final objective of this project, modifications to AASHTO guidelines for mitigation of ASR, will be prepared. It is anticipated that an improved systematic approach of ASR mitigation guidelines will be of great benefit to the state highway agencies. (updated 6/22/01)
