Objectives

To develop and test a rolling wheel defelectometer - a vehicle that can travel at speeds up to 55 MPH and while at the same time doing deflection testing. This study will enable the testing of pavement strength and deflection without having to close down lanes of traffic, or otherwise affect traffic flow. This study is being run by the Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR).

Comments

Phase I of the study, which designed a prototype vehicle, is complete. The results indicated a need to develop a better laser to test deflection. Testing of this new laser system is just commencing and has shown positive results to date. (2/5/02)
