Background

KDOT is proposing a pooled fund project to complete the research described in the NCHRP 2010 C-14 research project statement (copy attached). A review of the NCHRP ballot results shows that eight states gave a 5 (absolute need) ranking to the C-14 project statement and another six states ranked it with a 4. We are requesting these and other interested states to consider pooling funds to complete project.

Objectives

The objectives are to: 1. Compile current practice and research by various states and countries related to the effects that oversize/overweight vehicles (also called super loads) have on roundabout location, design and accommodation, and 2. Fill in information gaps with respect to roundabout design and operations for these classes of vehicles.

Scope of Work

The research will be conducted at Kansas State University. Dr. Eugene Russell, Professor Emeritus will be the Principal Investigator. Dr. Russell has considerable experience with the design and operation of roundabouts. Another national expert will be invited to join the research team. The scope of work and work tasks will be defined in collaboration with the Technical Advisory Committee.

Comments

Total amount of new federal funds needed are $200,000. We anticipate that seven other states will join us in the project with a minimum contribution of $30,000 each which may be contributed over one to three years. With larger contributions fewer states will be needed. The Kansas contribution will be $60,000 of in-kind state funds that are already under contract on K-TRAN Project KSU-10-1 with the same title.
