Objectives

This study will examine existing wall installations, conduct forensic investigations, determine and verify why some blocks are not durable; determine environmental factors influencing block durability; and examine influence of concrete components such as aggregates, cement content, cement type, and additives on block durability. In addition, it will examine/correlate existing test procedures (ASTM C 1262, C 666, etc) or develop new test procedures that correlate laboratory performance to field performance and accurately predict length of service. Based on the results of these efforts, the project will then develop a performance-based specification to ensure a 75-year design life for different climates or regions.
