Objectives

To develop traffic markings with improved long-term retro-reflectivity through the use of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads instead of glass beads. The long-term durability is improved because the PMMA beads will be chemically bonded to the paint system, rather than relying on adhesion forces, as do the silanized glass beads used in current markings. If the study is successful, the results will have wide spread application and will have the potential to increase safety. The project will include the measurement of the retro-reflectivity of current traffic paint to offer a rational comparison with the next generation of bead.

Comments

Active. Study is being initiated and funds are being solicited from potential project partners. Now in the process of selecting a contractor.
